Enough elements stay the same so that you can see the parallels between the two stories without it becoming a cookie-cutter, cheesy, unrealistic romance like so many other adaptations.

If I went into this book without knowing the name or that it was a retelling, I would have never guessed it was a futuristic version of Cinderella. At the end of each chapter, I was left wanting more. Marissa Meyer makes every word count, giving the reader new information that will ultimately add to the grand scheme of The Lunar Chronicles. Every second of reading will keep you captivated. My favorite element of this books is how every plot point intertwines: Cider and Kai’s romance, the negotiations with Luna, the letumosis pandemic even Cinder’s being a cyborg plays a big role in the story. And like ATLA’s successor, Legend of Korra, Cinder portrays the political aspects of a country well, showing the difficult decisions leaders have to make for their people. I compared this book to Avatar: The Last Airbender, because of the cultural representation and social discrimination both series show. I love how she incorporates so many Asian cultures into the Eastern Commonwealth’s community. Marissa Meyer’s writing style vividly paints the world she’s created into my mind without overused descriptions. Why did I wait so long to read this book? This is hands-down one of the best Cinderella retellings ever!Ĭonsidering my limited knowledge of advanced technology and how it works, I found it surprisingly easy to understand all the scientific terminology.

Blaming Cinder for her daughter’s illness, Cinder’s stepmother volunteers her body for plague research, an “honor” that no one has survived.īut it doesn’t take long for the scientists to discover something unusual about their new guinea pig. He jokingly calls it “a matter of national security,” but Cinder suspects it’s more serious than he’s letting on.Īlthough eager to impress the prince, Cinder’s intentions are derailed when her younger stepsister, and only human friend, is infected with the fatal plague that’s been devastating Earth for a decade. This reputation brings Prince Kai himself to her weekly market booth, needing her to repair a broken android before the annual ball. Being cyborg does have its benefits, though: Cinder’s brain interference has given her an uncanny ability to fix things (robots, hovers, her own malfunctioning parts), making her the best mechanic in New Beijing. Sixteen-year-old Cinder is considered a technological mistake by most of society and a burden by her stepmother.
